Winter Warmth: Why Propane is Better Than Electric

As temperatures have dropped to historic lows, it’s important that your home is a safe and cozy living space for your family and friends. At Holtzman Propane, we know our customers have options when it comes to choosing an energy source. We hear from a lot of people in the community who are not satisfied with electricity and have questions about the benefits of propane.

Most common complaints about Electric Heat:

I don’t feel warm in the winter; instead, I feel a cold draft.”This is not your imagination, and here’s the reason: Electric heat pump air from the duct is about 90 degrees, which is cool to the touch making it feel like a draft. By comparison, the air from the duct of a propane furnace is 110 degrees.

My electric bill sky rockets when it gets cold.”The pain in your pocketbook is real, and here’s the reason: When the temperature gets below 40 degrees or so, the heat pump’s electric heat strip is engaged. When this happens, the cost of electricity to heat the home increases from 35 cents per hour to $1.30 per hour. This is because the electric heat strip uses the same old technology as your toaster oven and hair dryer. Also, plug-in electric space heaters are inefficient.

If you are unhappy with electric heat, here are some propane options for heating your home that will solve these issues as well as enhance the efficiency of whole-house heat in many living spaces:

  • Efficient central furnace
  • Hearth and fireplace
  • Rinnai direct vent furnace
  • Infrared and blue flame heaters
