Spring Propane Checklist: Maintenance Tips for Tanks and Appliances

Gearing up for some spring cleaning? Don’t forget to add propane maintenance to your checklist. After heavy winter use, spring is the ideal time to check your tank and appliances to ensure they are clean and in good working order. The good news: checking propane maintenance tasks off your to-do list is easy. Here’s what to do:

  1. Inspect your tank. When the weather warms up, take a walk outside to visually inspect your propane tank. An underground tank should have a dome covering that stands above the level of the grass. If you have a vertical standing tank, inspect the entire tank to ensure it is upright and stable on its pad. Clear any debris that may have collected around the tank over the winter months.

  2. Check indoor appliances. Next, head back indoors to take a look at your propane-powered appliances. Make sure all ignition sources (pilot light, burners, fireplaces, etc.) light easily and have a normal color and size flame. While not powered by propane, it’s also a good idea to test your carbon monoxide detector as well.
  1. Prepare outdoor appliances. With warmer weather on the way, you’ll soon be spending more time outside, and will want to make sure your propane appliances are ready to go. Check connections and burners on your grill, fire pit, and outdoor lighting in the same way you inspected your indoor appliances. Keep in mind that outdoor hoses are more prone to cracking and deterioration, so replace any damaged hoses before using outdoor appliances.
