Propane Gas Energy Saving Tips for Fall & Winter

Pile of fall leaves with fan rake on lawn

Though it may still be warm in many areas of Virginia, it is time to start preparing for cold weather. Many people dread this time of year, worried that their heating bills will spike as temperatures drop. However, there is still time before turning on the heat full time, and we have a list of ways you can save on energy this winter:

  1. Proper sealing: If you have drafty windows and doors, or older wooden floorboards that let air through, you’ll want to make sure you have them properly sealed. These areas can run your energy bills up by letting cold air in.
  2. Make use of sunlight: During the day when the sun is shining bright, be sure all of you curtains and shades are open to let It naturally warm your home. This way, you won’t need to crank the heat nearly as much during daylight hours.
  3. Pay attention while cooking: This may seem small, but wasted gas from cooking adds up over time. Make sure the flame doesn’t extend over the bottom of the pan while cooking. Turning the gas on high doesn’t always make it the pan heat faster, and it’ll use more gas in the process.
  4. Checks & tune-ups: To make sure your appliances and heating system are working efficiently, have them serviced by a professional at least once a year.
  5. Change filters: A dirty filter takes more work to pull air through your forced air heating system. Before turning on the heat this fall, check the filters on your furnace and air returns to see if they need to be cleaned or replaced.
  6. Programmable thermostat: Install a thermostat that allows you to program a temperature change when you go to bed or leave the house. This way the heat will not be as high when no one is home to benefit.

Stay warm and efficient this fall and winter! If you have questions about your heating system or need to schedule your regular tune-up, contact your nearest Holtzman Propane location.
