Hearth
A hearth consists of the non-combustible floor area and the interior of a fireplace, and its main job is to protect the floor of the home from embers and sparks. Hearths are commonly made of stone, brick, or tile, and many different styles of hearths are available to match a home’s aesthetic. Panel or Screen
Another stylistic element of a propane fireplace is the front of the unit. Glass panels contain flames and sparks and are generally considered safer, especially for young children (although it’s important to note that the glass panel will get hot). Screens come in a variety of styles, including flat panel, three-panel, arched, and those with doors. They can also include designs on the screen, such as linear patterns, glass inserts, and nature-inspired motifs.
Controls
The controls on a propane fireplace are used to turn the flame on or off, adjust its height and heat output, and even set a schedule. Blowers, or fireplace fans, can be added to a propane fireplace to help circulate warm air throughout the room. Blowers are often found at the base of the firebox or at its sides. While universal blowers are available, it’s important to install one that matches your fireplace insert model.
Venting System
There are several options when it comes to venting your propane fireplace. Direct vent systems utilize a pipe to pull outside air into the unit and to push exhaust back out. Natural venting systems pull air from the room and then send exhaust outdoors through a chimney. Finally, ventless systems use air from the room for combustion and delivers 99% of the available heat energy directly to the room. Since this system needs no chimney or pipes for ventilation, it can be easily installed in any home.
