Proactively Preparing Our Heating Oil For Winter

From October through March each year, Holtzman Oil takes a proactive approach and winterizes our heating oil for cold weather performance. Heating oil doesn’t freeze like water but instead thickens into a gel. This can clog fuel lines and nozzles, preventing the oil from flowing to the furnace. Our additives lower the cold filter plugging point, lower the pour point and disperse wax, which prevents fuel from gelling in cold temperatures.

1. CFPP – Cold Filter Plugging Point
At low temperatures, heating oil can develop a waxy gel that clogs filters and fuel lines, stopping the system from running. The cold filter plugging point (CFPP) is the lowest temperature at which fuel will still pass through a filter without becoming clogged by wax crystals. Holtzman treats their heating oil in winter to lower the CFPP to ensure your equipment stays running and you stay comfortable.

2. Pour Point
The pour point of heating oil is the lowest temperature at which it will still flow, and it is a critical factor for cold-weather performance. Untreated #2 heating oil has a typical pour point of around 17 degrees Fahrenheit, but Holtzman lowers the pour point of our heating oil by including our additives which modify wax crystals to prevent gelling.

3. Waxing
Heating oil comes from crude oil, which contains long hydrocarbon chains that form wax platelets. When the temperature drops, these platelets crystallize and solidify, causing the oil to thicken and turn “waxy” or “gelled”. Holtzman prevents this process by proactively including our additives to winterize your heating oil.

This proactive approach to winterize our heating oil is another way that Holtzman works to provide better service to our customers, keeping them warm and comfortable all year round.
