Keep Cozy All Season: Preparing Your Propane System for Winter

Cold weather is just around the corner and soon it will be time to turn up the thermostat to find relief from the frigid days. If you currently use propane to heat your home, you’re in good hands! Propane provides a strong, consistent heat that envelopes your home with warmth. However, to keep your home feeling cozy all season long, it’s important to take proactive steps to make sure that your propane system is in good working condition.

1. Clear the path to your propane tank. Summer growth, autumn leaves, and general debris can sometimes make it difficult for drivers to access propane tanks. Take the time now—before it gets too cold—to create a clear path to your propane tank so that it can be refilled easily.

2. Service equipment that is powered by propane. Contact a professional to clean and maintain the heating equipment in your home, such as the furnace or boiler. This inspection should be completed once a year, ideally in the fall before you start to regularly heat your home. It’s also a good time to inspect your other appliances that run on propane, like your stove, fireplace, and water heater. Holtzman Heating and Cooling can schedule planned maintenance service for you.

3. Clean outdoor vents. Proper ventilation is important for many vented propane appliances to operate safely and effectively. Take a walk around your house and check the vents associated with each appliance, clearing them as needed.

4. Test generators. If you have a generator—a great investment if you tend to lose power during the winter months—test it in the fall to make sure that it starts up and works well

5. Confirm account information for automatic refills. At Holtzman, we automatically monitor tank levels and schedule deliveries so that you never run out of propane. As we enter the winter season, if your contact email or phone number has changed, please let us know. You can send a message through our website, through your MyFuelPortal account or call us!

As a full-service provider, Holtzman can take care of all of your propane needs, from tank and appliance installation, propane refills, and service and maintenance. Contact us today at (888) 306-4243 or online to discuss your propane needs before winter arrives.
